PuppyCanine Parvovirus :

  • Highly contagious
  • Serious
  • Attacks the gastro intestinal tract of puppies, dogs and wild canids.
  • Spread when puppies or dogs ingest virus in another dog’s infected feces (stool)
  • Most at risk are puppies less than four months old and dogs not vaccinated yet
    • Signs are lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, vomiting, severe and often bloody diarrhea
    • Deaths occur within 48-72 hours
  • Diagnosis based on clinical appearance and laboratory tests
  • Treatment should be started early by keeping dog warm and separated from other dogs
  • Not easily killed, see us for specific cleaning agents
  • PREVENTION is by vaccination
  • Hygiene
    • Use caution with puppies in public places before being vaccinated.
    • Do not allow dog or puppy to come into contact with fecal waste from other dogs.
